Ali the gem dealer.

by SAMUEL Huang

My friend Ali had an expensive paraiba tourmaline over 10 carats from Mozambique that he wanted recut. This is a great story that shows you how a well cut stone can bring out the true beauty and value of the stone. This makes all the difference in a special piece of jewelry.

Here you can see the original tourmaline that is typically cut overseas or by machine as normal commercial cut stones. The large clear window indicates the stone has been cut at the wrong angles. Even though the color is great the stone looks dead.

I reoriented the stone and cut the bottom at ideal angles like I do to all of my gem stones, transferred the stone and recut the table. I was able to keep the stone the same shape and added a design that had more facets to hide the inclusions and flaws in the original stone so that it was more brilliant.

Here  you can see the transformation of the stone!

This ended up being a 9.45 carat paraiba tourmaline valued at 9,000$ per carat … close to $60,000 ! Needless to say Ali was very happy. I try to cut all my faceted stones with completely natural, untreated rough ….at ideal angles and cuts…and with unique facet designs that make for special artistic jewelry. The designs cut is named ‘Lotus’ and appears on many stones I offer for sale.
